Haruki Kiyama, a contemporary artist, dancer, and actor based in Japan and the United States, will hold the art exhibition "505 I found" at the contemporary art gallery DRELLA in Daikanyama, Tokyo, from September 29 to October 9, 2023. Kiyama was born to a Japanese dancer father, Isaburo Hanayagi, and a ballerina mother, Kayoko Koyama. Both of his parents were stage performers, and he received a gifted education in Japanese dance, ballet, and oil painting from a young age. He entered the Philadelphia College of Art and Design with a BFA in Graphic Design and graduated with a BFA in Performing Arts. Kiyama made his Broadway debut as the first Japanese performer in the worldwide popular magic show "The Illusionist". Currently, he is active as an artist through creative presentations of oil paintings and digital art, and as a stage actor in musicals such as Toukenranbu (Wild Dance of Swords), crossing genres as an all-around artist. Raised in Japan as a child and in the U.S. as a young adult, Kiyama has always sought his own identity as an artist between Japanese and Western styles, and the influence of these styles can be seen in his work. The soft curves of his new works, which will be shown in his solo exhibition "505 I found," following "Hello my name is" held last year, are inspired by "Karesansui," a traditional Japanese garden style in which rocks and sand are used to express mountains and water without using water.
The soft curves of his work evoke a sense of Japanese harmony, while the modern sensibilities of American pop art and street culture, where he spent his youth, are fused into a unique work of art. The title of the solo exhibition, "505 I found," is a play on words, using "404 not found," a symbol of the chaos of the information society, as a way of saying that he has found a world beyond the chaos of the information society. The artist says that he wanted to use the title to convey the positive message contained in the word "found," which means something new, such as a goal, an idea, or a chance.
Haruki Kiyama
“The world we live in, both real and virtual, is becoming more and more complex with each passing day, while we have access to a vast amount of information, and before we know it, we don't even know what is real and what is not. 404 not found, the error message that appears when a web page cannot be found, is the most common error message. It seems to symbolize our confusion, which is divided by echo chambers, dancing in the rat race of filter bubbles. 505 I found. The light behind the error message. In the age of AI, where perfection is demanded, art is the crystallization of imagination created by imperfect people. I believe that the power of art can provide clues to finding the truth in this chaotic world."
